Water drops that fall on lotus roll off easily due to which it always keeps itself clean and this superhydrophobic effect or lotus effect which makes lotus leave self-cleaning plants. 

This leaves not only the remains dry but the droplets when rollback clean the dirt too. Water can dance on lotus leaves because of the rough texture and this rough texture is because of the superhydrophobic effect.

What is a superhydrophobic surface?

The superhydrophobic surface is made of extremely small or tiny hairs that repel water and could be seen only by using a microscope. Because of that when a water drop falls on the surface of the lotus leaf, the water drop bounces like a ball without making the surface wet.

The superhydrophobic was first observed on lotus leaves and some other plants.

The superhydrophobic surface is the only reason why lotus leaves do not get wet. Superhydrophobic surface means very difficult to wet or dirt the object due to water repellent surface. Because of the superhydrophobic surface, we can see the lotus effect.

Lotus effect is nothing but self-cleaning of leaves. The surface of the water leaves is rough and is covered by a wax-like material which results in a superhydrophobic surface. Only 2% of water reaches the surface of the lotus leaf.
